Worshipping Through Scripture – “In The Beginning”

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).  We are all familiar with the creation.  In Genesis 1, God created earth and everything in it starting from nothing.  With just one command, He created earth instantaneously.   He made the sun, the moon, the seas, the animals, and all mankind in six days.  He saw it all good and rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2).

The beginning of time is a great reminder on how we serve a big God.  He is the creator of the universe.  He created earth so we could have life and share it with Him.  There are an abundance of worship songs that portray the power of God through His creation.  Some of my favorite artists and bands have songs on God’s creation such as Skillet, Newsong, Chris Tomlin, Third Day, Hillsong, Michael W. Smith, Jimmy Needham, and Steven Curtis Chapman.  These are well-known, modern-day artists who have the ability to touch their fans through their lyrics.

Each artist and band have one thing in common: they all love to worship God and, through their music, bring others to Christ.  The band, Skillet, is known for their Christian rock style, and they have a song that I love called, “Stars”.  It talks about how God spoke the world into motion.  The first verse declares who God is by telling the “oceans where to start and where to end.”  The song in the second verse reminds us to put our trust in God, because He hold[s] the stars in place.”  These two verses come from Geneses 1 verses 1, 6-9, and 14.   As we read further into the lyrics, the artist references Jesus calming the raging sea (Psalm 89:9; Matthew 8:23-27) and the prodigal son (Luke 11-32).

Newsong, another popular contemporary music group sings a song called, “When God Made You.”  This song is sung at weddings and celebrations for finding your perfect match, your soulmate.  If we go back to Adam and Eve’s time in the Garden of Eden in Genesis, we will see that Eve was perfectly made for Adam.  God said that man should not be alone and that He would “make a helper suitable for [Adam]” (Genesis 2:18).  Eve was made to Adam’s perfection.  The writer of this song expressed the perfect love between two souls.  In the chorus, it states in awe, “I wonder what God was thinking when He created you.”  I can only imagine Adam being in awe of His wife that God specifically created just for Him.

Chris Tomlin is a well-known contemporary Christian artist who launched his music career nationally in 2001.  He covered a song written by Laura Story called, “Indescribable.”  The song declares who God is through His creation.  It proclaims that He is “indescribable, uncontainable…all powerful, untameable…incomparable, unchangeable” God.  These are powerful words about God that can transform our lives if we believe He is all those things.  The lyrics continue to proclaim who God is by declaring “You are amazing.”  This line repeats in the chorus several times and states that God’s creation reveals His majesty.  This song has powerful lyrics that draws us a mental picture of how majestic God is, and how we need to praise Him for who He is.

Steven Curtis Chapman, another contemporary Christian artist, is known for being a songwriter, record producer, actor, and author.  He is a talented artist who impacts the world with his music, acting career, and writings.  He wrote a song called, “All Things New” in 2004. It is about God’s creation, but Chapman goes further into Scripture describing how God made everything new (Isaiah 43:8; Revelation 21:5; Isaiah 65:17).  The lyrics states that we are redeemed (Job 19:25), transformed (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2:20; 1 John 9), renewed (Isaiah 40:31; Ephesians 4:23), and restored (Psalm 51:10-12 through Jesus Christ, the son of God.  When we are living for God, He “make[s] all things new.”  This song tells us to forever worship our Creator, because we become a new person in Christ.

APPLICATION

The music we listen to impacts our lives for the good or the bad.  Positive uplifting music lifts our spirits as the negative sad music brings us down.  Can we only imagine how Christian music with Scripture in it transforms our lives?!  We sing praises to God and shout out His Name every time we sing a worship song.  It is the most precious time with the Lord when we are praising His Name through worship.  Worship is a form of prayer that is sung.  We celebrate God through worship.  We honor Him through worship.  We are loving on God through worship.  Let’s praise His Name for His Creation!
