I Am God’s Temple

God tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  Hebrews 4:12 says, “for the Word of God is alive and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  When we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit brings correction.  The Bible teaches how to be righteous by doing good.

Yesterday, I talked about how we are God’s masterpiece.  We are created in God’s image.  Ephesians 2:10 states, “for we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  Before we were born, God had big plans for our lives.

First Corinthians 3:16 reminds us that we “are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in [our] midst.”  We have to protect the body God gave us on earth to do His will.  We cannot contaminate the temple God has given us by unhealthy decisions and worldly matters.  Romans 12:2 warns us to “not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

We need to treat our bodies like a sacred temple.  “Anything that contains God’s presence is deemed holy” (lifehopeandtruth.com).  We are holy through Christ Jesus!  We are made by God to be in His image which means what we say and do reflects who Christ is in us.

  1. Very true…we often forget this while we are in the world, and we need to remember it. We aren’t like other people, so we need to behave differently. I’m as guilty as probably the next believer of sometimes forgetting this, and not wanting to discipline my flesh, or even more, reveling in the lack of discipline, based on how I feel that day, or week. But the Holy Spirit wants to live in a place that’s clean and tidy, or at least close to it (i.e. the dishwasher is emptied and the dishes put away, vs. the sink is full of dirty dishes). (hope this metaphor works) 😛

    • I love the dishwasher metaphor. It definitely works for this topic. I am guilty of not protecting my body. I eat bad foods sometimes or eat too much. I don’t sleep enough and tire myself out from being able to do Godly things. I speak when I should remain quiet. I could go on. When we allow our emotions to override our faith, we lose sight of who God is in us. We allow the flesh to win rather than the holy spirit. Looking different from the world is hard but doable with God.
